Developing Understanding of Numbers, PK-1 - Online

Description

Ever wonder why some children struggle to acquire a strong number sense and foundation for early mathematics and fluency? Have you worked hard – but to little or no success – trying to help older students abandon counting-by-ones strategies to add or subtract? Research and experience shows that it is critical for young children to understand and be able to visualize numbers as quantities, relate numbers to 5 and 10, and flexibly compose-decompose numbers. These understandings provide a strong foundation for students to flexibly use more efficient ten-based strategies to calculate.

In this course, you will learn how to use East West Math’s “visual karate” method. Visual karate, a research-based method, uses the ten frame to develop children’s number images with quantities. East West Math’s Visualizing to 20 Mastery Cards include ten frames, numeral cards, and story pictures that go with specially-designed activities and games.

In this course, participants will learn the following:

  • the importance of students’ understanding number as a quantity and how the ten-frame model helps students visualize numbers in this way
  • specific learning activities and games that develop understanding and visualization
  • techniques for observing, assessing, and keeping track of children’s progress

Format and Duration

This course is organized into five unit lessons, including the introduction. Each lesson will run 1 week for a total of 5 weeks. Convenient teacher access is provided 24/7. Learning time - plan for approximately 20-30 min per day or 2.5 hours per week.
