Solving Problems with Bar Models - Online PD

Description

This online course will provide an introduction for solving problems with bar models in Grades 1-5. This knowledge will be directly applicable for understanding and implementing Singapore-based math programs such as Math in Focus, Primary Mathematics, and Dimensions Math. Topics covered include the methodology and rationale for using bar models to solve a variety of word problems in mathematics. Participants will be introduced to the part-whole and comparison models for solving problems involving the four operations with whole numbers and use bar modeling heuristic to solve a variety of problems. Educators will learn practical strategies of helping their students use the bar modeling techniques effectively. Differentiating instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners will be explored. This course is aligned with Next Generations Standards.

Format and Duration

This interactive online course is designed to accommodate busy schedules of modern educators. Teachers will learn asynchronously from anywhere and on their own schedule only 10-15 minutes a day. The course is organized into 4 units of instruction and each unit will run one week. Convenient teacher access is provided 24/7.

Content and Activities

This course contains a variety of Singapore Math instructional videos, program-based texts, and other readings. Activities include interactive weekly discussions and carefully selected assignments. Our knowledgeable & experienced trainers will interact with participants and moderate group discussions to engage teachers in the learning process. They will also provide feedback to participants upon completion of assignments & discussions.

Cancellation & Refund Policy:

This course requires minimum enrollment of 10 participants. East West Math reserves the right to cancel the course in the event of insufficient enrollment. In such event prospective participants will be notified of cancellation as soon as possible.

100% of a paid registration fee will be refunded if an educator cannot participate and notifies us at least 14 days before the day of the course. 50% of the paid registration fee will be refunded if an educator cannot participate and notifies us between 7 and 14 days before a day of the course. No refunds will be issued if an educator cannot participate and notifies us less than 7 days prior to a day of the course. Instead of receiving a partial refund, educators could also choose to participate in another course at a later date without a charge, provided that space will be available. In the event of a medical emergency, 100% of the paid registration fee will be refunded, provided a participant forwards proper documentation.
