Overall, our online PD courses and seminars offer an alternative to onsite professional development to educators for whom Singapore Math onsite learning may be unavailable or too costly.

This mathematically content-focused and rigorous course will provide an introduction to the Bar Modeling method for solving word problems in grades 2, 3, 4 and 5. Bar Modeling is also known as the Singapore Math model method. The Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSS-M) and New York State Learning Standards (NYSLS) identify Bar Models as Tape Diagrams and Strip Diagrams. Topics covered include the methodology and rationale for using Bar Models to solve a variety of word problems in mathematics. Participants will be introduced to the part-whole and comparison models for solving problems involving the four operations with whole numbers and use bar modeling heuristic to solve one and two-step word problems. Teachers will learn practical strategies of helping their students use the bar modeling techniques effectively. Differentiating instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners will be explored. This course is aligned with the CCSS-M and NYSLS in the domains of Operations and Algebraic Thinking in Grades 2-5.

Activities & Structure

This asynchronous online course is based on the constructivist's pedagogy, which is the same inquiry-based method used in teaching Singapore Math. This course is organized into six units of instruction and each unit lasts one week.  East West Math's instructional designers and subject matter experts used the latest technologies, such as computer-mediated communication and Web 2.0 interactive tools, to recreate meaningful, trainer led learning experiences online that promote deep learning and improve the instructional quality of professional development in K-5 mathematics. This course will include weekly assignments, discussions, and fielding questions. Our trainers will moderate group discussions to engage teachers in the learning process and provide feedback to all participants upon completion of the assignments.

Cancellation & Refund Policy:

This course requires minimum enrollment of 15 participants. East West Math reserves the right to cancel the course in the event of insufficient enrollment. In such event prospective participants will be notified of cancellation as soon as possible.

100% of a paid registration fee will be refunded if an educator cannot participate and notifies us at least 14 days before the day of the course. 50% of the paid registration fee will be refunded if an educator cannot participate and notifies us between 7 and 14 days before a day of the course. No refunds will be issued if an educator cannot participate and notifies us less than 7 days prior to a day of the course. Instead of receiving a partial refund, educators could also choose to participate in another seminar at a later date without a charge, provided that space will be available. In the event of a medical emergency, 100% of the paid registration fee will be refunded, provided a participant forwards proper documentation.
