Day 1: August 26, 2015
Morning
How to Teach Multiplication and Division with CPA & Modeling in Gr. 3-5: Participants will learn strategies to build student understanding of multiplication and division and connect the model to the abstract. The use of place value mats and base ten blocks, as well as the area model will be emphasized to connect conceptual understanding to the algorithm.
Afternoon
World-class Instruction with Board Use in Gr. 3-5: Participants will understand how Asian teachers in top performing countries use the blackboard or whiteboard to develop a clear lesson flow and structure. Careful use of this tool can help students develop note taking skills and make connections to related mathematical concepts. We will examine pictures of boards in the U.S. and around the world.
Day 2: August 27, 2015
Morning
Advanced Problem Solving with the Use of Bar Modeling in Gr. 3-5: Participants will explore challenging problems using representative model drawing. Model lessons using bar modeling will be explored. Helping students with perseverance will be discussed.
Afternoon
How to Correct Student Misconceptions in Gr. 3-5: Participants will examine student work in order to think deeply about students’ errors and evidence of understanding. Common misconceptions will be discussed. We will examine strategies to diagnose student errors and approaches to help students overcome these obstacles.
