Our seminars and unique manipulatives are based on the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract pedagogy on which Singapore Math is founded. These workshops offer practical teaching strategies for developing fluency of math facts, mental math and companion manipulatives that you’ll be able to use with your students immediately:

Numerous games & activities for developing mastery of math facts
Painless drills: build math fluency effortlessly
Strategies for increasing mental math skills
Visualization strategies for developing cardinality of numbers
Game centers ready activities
Differentiating your instruction with a wealth of math activities
Formatively assessing students with games

Day 1: August 21, 2017

Morning

Developing Number Sense Through Teaching Story Problem Situations

This workshop will focus on understanding of numbers through discussing number story situations. Mathematical ideas are best understood when students see a need for their use. The story problem situations help students see relevant uses of math concepts to make sense of what they are learning. They expose students to the major concepts of mathematics as they arise naturally in story problem situations. Participants will explore a variety of such number story situations with use of the new manipulatives.

Afternoon

Developing Fluency with Math Games & Activities

Participants will learn how to gamify mathematics learning and immerse their students in the practice of math facts to mastery. Through games, activities and use of manipulatives, participants will investigate strategies of helping students visualize, classify, compose, decompose, compare, add and subtract numbers. Participants will explore subitizing techniques of readily identifying the number of objects in a set without counting. Participants will also explore ways to differentiate instruction and scaffold lessons for struggling learners through implementing game centers that are focused on different areas of math fluency.

Day 2: August 22, 2017

Morning

Problem Solving with Board Use & Math Journals

Participants will understand how teachers in top performing countries use the whiteboard to develop clear lesson flow and structure.  Careful use of this tool can help students develop note- taking skills and make connections to related mathematical concepts. Participants will think deeply about students’ errors and evidence of understanding.  Common misconceptions will be discussed.  We will examine strategies to help diagnose student errors and approaches to help students overcome these obstacles.

Afternoon

Geometry & Measurement

This workshop focuses on development of mathematical ideas in Geometry and Measurement through CPA. Topics covered may include sorting & classifying objects, combining different shapes, combining common shapes to make new shapes, dividing a shape into a common shape and making models. Participants will explore ways to measure, using standard and non-standard units. Participants will engage in activities that involve estimation and comparison with use of manipulatives.

Check in: 8:00 am to 8:30 am. All seminars are scheduled from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Space is limited to 30 participants. Fee includes lunch & personalized certificate of participation.

Purchase Orders from schools are accepted. Please call or email us for more info.
