Description

Proud parents and grandparents often ask their young children “How high can you count?” and children respond proudly by counting to “prove” how smart or grown-up they are!  Yet, as teachers of young preK and K students, we know that repeating the counting sequence is not enough to build a strong number sense.  This workshop is designed to look more closely at early primary years’ learning about numbers and relationships among numbers, underscoring how to build number sense in base ten.  This workshop mirrors the scope and sequence of instruction used in Singapore texts, where visualizing, decomposing/composing, and comparing numbers to 5, 10, and 20 is strategically and incrementally built.

We will begin by looking closely at early childhood math education findings and east Asian teaching methods and tools. Our goal is for you to leave satisfied that you have learned exciting ways to augment your PreK and K, or instruction with new ideas and tools for instruction, including a system you can immediately begin using … with East West Math’s “Visualizing to 20 Mastery Cards.”
