Day 1: August 20, 2018

Developing Understanding of Multiplication and Division with CPA & Modeling.

Participants will learn strategies to build student understanding of multiplication and division and how to help students connect the model to the abstract. The use of place value mats and base ten blocks, as well as the area model will be emphasized to connect conceptual understanding to the algorithm.

Developing Fluency with Math Games

Participants will learn how to gamify mathematics learning and immerse their students in the practice of math facts to mastery. Through games, activities and use of manipulatives, participants will investigate strategies for helping students visualize multiplication and division concepts. Participants will also explore ways to differentiate instruction and scaffold lessons for struggling learners through implementing game centers that are focused on different areas of math fluency.

Problem Solving with Board Use & Math Journals

Participants will develop understanding of how teachers in top performing countries use the whiteboard to develop clear lesson flow and structure. Careful use of this tool can help students develop note-taking skills and make connections to related mathematical concepts. Participants will think deeply about students’ errors and evidence of understanding. Common misconceptions will be discussed. We will examine strategies to help diagnose student errors and approaches to help students overcome these obstacles.

Day 2: August 21, 2018

Advanced Problem Solving with the Use of Bar Modeling

This workshop focuses on the Singapore Math® model drawing method for solving word problems in grades 3, 4 and 5. Participants will explore challenging problems using representative model drawing. Topics covered will include the use of part-whole and comparison models to solve problems involving the four operations, and using bar models to solve multi-step word problems. Teachers will learn practical suggestions on how to help their students to learn and use the bar model effectively. Model lessons using bar modeling will be explored. Helping students with perseverance will be discussed.

How to Use Models to Represent & Solve Fractions Problems

Participants will learn how to represent fractions with fractional models, the meaning of fractions, how fractions are composed of unit fractions, helping students to understand fractions as numbers, operations with fractions and mixed numbers, how to make the connections between operations with whole numbers and operations with fractions, and activities and games that deepen students understanding of fractions.

Check in: 8:00 am to 8:30 am. All seminars are scheduled from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Space is limited to 30 participants. Fee includes lunch & personalized certificate of participation.
